Lipid Droplets

The appearance of intracytoplasmic lipid droplets is variable. In this cell, lipid droplets are moderately electron dense. Note the variation in size.

Any cell can contain an occasional lipid droplet. Thus the diagnostic utility of the lipid droplet is limited. However, abundant lipid droplets such as those seen above can be found in:

  • Fibrous Histiocytomas, benign and malignant
  • Hepatomas
  • Hibernomas
  • Lipomas and liposarcomas
  • Lipoid cell ovarian neoplasms
  • Steroid secreting tumor
  • Sebaceous neoplasm
