Lysosomes

Lysosomes are autophagic vacuoles that are present in many cell types. Primary lysosomes are electron dense granules with a size range of 0.25 to 0.5 micrometers. They are easily confused with neurosecretory granules. Fusion of the primary lysosome with either phagocytosed material or intracellular substances produces the secondary lysosomes (L). The lysosomes have a heterogeneous morphology and contain vacuoles or lipid.

Lysosomes are prominent in the following conditions or tumors:

  • Granular cell tumors
  • Malignant histiocytosis
  • Oncocytomas
  • Warthin's tumor
