Mitochondria

Mitochondria (M) are the power houses of the cell. They can be quite pleomorphic. The mitochondrion has a peripheral double membrane. The inner aspect of this membrane are the cristae (arrow) that project into the mitochondria matrix.

Plate-like (lamellar)cristae (arrow) are typical of the mitochondria cristae in oncocytomas. Tubular cristae are associated with mitochondria in benign and malignant steroid secreting cells.

Mitochondria are a prominent feature in:

  • Oncocytomas
  • Oncocytic cells
