Desmosome

Desmosomes are special cell junction that are characteristic of epithelial cells. The desmosome consists of two opposing dense plaques (arrow) on the cytoplasmic membranes. Tonofilament bundles insert into each half of the desmosome. Amorphous material is present in the intercellular space and often, a central dense line can be seen.

Desmosomes are characteristic of squamous differentiation. They are prominent in normal squamous epithelium and some squamous cell carcinomas.
