Intercellular Junctions - Tight Junctions

Tight junctions (arrow) consist of two closely apposed cytoplasmic membranes without an intervening gap.

M = microvilli; R = Central core rootlets of actin filaments.

Tight junctions are present at the apices of glandular cells. Tight junctions are helpful in differentiating between intracellular and extracellular lumina. Since tight junctions are associated with glandular differentiation, they will be found in both benign and malignant glandular cells.
